I can remember always having a notebook close by when I was
younger. From the time I was in second or third grade, I spent at least part of
the day writing down my thoughts. During this time, I wrote fantastical
accounts based slightly on reality but always exaggerated. In my stories, I
always played the heroine, and I almost always was surrounded by friends and
animals. Mrs. Dale and Mrs. Wilkinson, my English teachers in middle school,
played a major role in improving the quality of my writing. The bulk of their
curriculum revolved around composition. During this time, I was introduced to
“funeral words,” an off-limits group of words that primarily consisted of
passive verbs. I still think carefully about using these words.
Throughout my education, I have enjoyed writing; however,
this changed during my freshman writing class. Out of my comfort zone in the
university setting and unsure of the most productive use of my time, I
struggled in this class. The professor proved to be a difficultly as well.
While I am sure her intentions were good, her criticisms stung. Through this
experience my love and enthusiasm for writing waned.
While I do enjoy researching and writing, I never regained
the pure love of writing I experienced previously or returned to the fiction I
wrote as a child and adolescent. I mostly concentrate on sharing my story with
my friends and family through blog postings.
However, I recently discovered a website/app called Fan
Fiction. Basically, it is a database of numerous amateur writers who base their
stories on popular books, television shows, and movies (among other things).
While this website has provided innumerable opportunities for me to avoid
responsibility, it has also inspired me to start writing for fun again.
Numerous ideas for stories have gone through my brain;
however, one main theme has remained constant in these ideas that basically
become daydreams. They involve a kidnapping or removal of people from our world
to another world. Often this other world provides opportunities they would not
have here on earth, and for the most part they get to return to their loved
ones. I also know that it is important to write about the things that you know
best, and for a while, I have been interested in writing a story based on my
college experiences. These were the formative years of my life, and there was
enough drama (often self-created) to fill an entire soap opera. In the past few
days, as I have been thinking of this blog and writing, I decided why not merge
these ideas. That way I could have the best of both worlds.
I don’t promise to update this regularly, as I am in school,
work full-time, and have all of the many responsibilities associated with being
an adult, but I will do my best because I think this will be a nice creative
break, which can hopefully help alleviate the influence of stress in my life. I
doubt that anyone will really read this, but hey, it’s always worth a try.
